In the fall of 2017, FBI Director Christopher Wray established the Foreign Influence Task Force (FITF) to identify and counteract malign foreign influence operations targeting the United States as the FBI website states. Foreign influence operations are actions taken by foreign government to influence U.S. Political sentiment or public discourse.
In November 2016, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu phoned Rep. Omar to congratulate her on her election victory. In November 2018, the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu phoned Rep. Omar once again to congratulate her when she was elected to the US house of representatives.
Why is the Foreign Minister of Turkey, a nation that the State Department considers a LEVEL 3 (of 4) Travel Advisory calling to congratulate Ilhan Omar, a Muslim Congresswoman from Minnesota?
Why has a Congresswoman from Minnesota met with the President of Turkey, the Foreign Minister of Turkey, and the Turkish Consul General? Representative Ilhan Omar represents the 5th Congressional District of Minnesota. So why and how is she connected with Turkey’s top leaders?
Just after the 2016 elections, Ilhan Omar was invited to be a speaker on a panel at the “Who Is A Defender? International Human Rights Defenders Conference.” The conference was held in Istanbul, Turkey, where Erdogan lost the election last month. Erdogan, as any dictator who loses an election does, lost the election in March 2019 and annulled the results because he lost by 30,000 votes. The re-election that occurred last month was lost by his party again, and this time by a staggering 250,000 votes.
When Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was in New York for the UN General Assembly in September of 2017, he met with Omar. AKP, which is President Erdoğan’s party, tweeted about the meeting from its official Twitter account.
It’s incredible how Omar has such strong ties to a nation that has a track record of genocide, ethnic cleansing and, happens to be one of the biggest supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood, which the Trump administration has expressed a desire to designate as a terrorist organization. Turkey is not exactly a US ally, as Erdogan is constantly hostile to the United States of America and Israel. Several months ago following the Christchurch mosque shooting, Erdogan held a campaign rally in which he promised to put critics of Islam in caskets. Erdogan has also been cited saying there is no such thing as moderate Islam throughout his quest to restore Sharia Law in Turkey.
